Computer Hardware Needs For Computer Evidence Processing

Frequently, we are asked about system configurations required for the processing of computer evidence. In NTI's Computer Forensics Laboratory we don't buy any specific pre-built computers or specialized machines. We find that it is more important to have computer systems built using specific motherboards. Our lab managers likes ABIT and ASUS because other motherboards can give you problems when accessing large IDE drives.

We recommend that you work with somebody in your local area to build a computer system specific to your needs. All that is really needed is a reputable computer shop and tell them exactly what you want in your system. Obviously lots of memory and large power supplies are important. Removable drive trays are also a timesaver. We use CRU DataPort trays here at NTI and they seem to do the job. If you're only going to use your machines for the making of bit stream backup copies, then you can pick up a "bare-bones system". Otherwise, don't skimp on the components. The bottom line is that you don't need to spend a lot of money on computer hardware and it is always nice to deal with someone in your local area from a convenience standpoint.
